Amnesty International to ‘Demand Dignity’ in Africa
High Level Mission to Kenya: 8 - 12 June 2009
Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan is to lead a High Level Mission to Kenya to launch the first action of the Demand Dignity campaign, focussing on slums and informal settlements.
During the Mission, Irene Khan will visit a number of Nairobi’s informal settlements, including the largest slum in sub-Saharan Africa, where hundreds of thousands of residents are regularly denied access to the basic human rights of proper housing, sanitation and education.
She will also launch a comprehensive report into the human rights abuses carried out in Nairobi’s slum areas.
As part of the launch, people are set to march from settlements across Nairobi to converge on Ufungamano House where they will join Amnesty International to voice their demand for the right to adequate housing.
The visit will include discussions on human rights in Kenya with senior government officials and civil society representatives.
A press conference for the High Level Mission will be held on Thursday 11 June at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi.
High Level Mission to Zimbabwe: 13 - 19 June 2009
Irene Khan will also lead a Mission to Zimbabwe to address the grave human rights situation in the country. She will meet human rights activists, representatives of civil society, victims of human rights violations and government officials.
Further details will be made available closer to the events. For information or to request an interview with Irene Khan please contact:
